Beauty products are becoming increasingly more expensive, and as companies continue to push more and more sparkling new products our way, it is vital we are not swayed by glossy advertising and airbrush enhanced celebrities claiming the wonders of the latest mascara, skin cream, or hair product.

Instead, try following these simple tips to start making beauty savings instead of deteriorating your bank account.

1) Use up what you already have! Many of us fall into the trap of snagging the newest product on the market, while the last ‘Big Thing’ we previously bought sits half full in our makeup bags or on our bathroom counter. Before you start looking around for something new, ensure you have used up what you already have.

2) Samples are a great way to save a pretty penny. Boutiques, specialty shops, and beauty counters are eager to give them away in hopes that you will love the product and keep returning for full size versions. Don’t be afraid to stop by highstreet stores, department stores, and/or chemist beauty counters (such as Boots) throughout the year to stock up on samples. Always ask about the latest product releases or launches, as there will be guaranteed samples of those.

Tip: If you’re on your way to a date or are planning a girl’s night out, save your own make up and ask for a makeover from your favorite beauty counter! Bare Minerals gives excellent makeovers and you can go with a friend and have fun discovering new looks and products. They will even give you free samples at the end of your trip.

3) Purchase items which have multiple uses. For example, BB Creams, the latest beauty fad, are a multifunctional skin product, that serve as an SPF, foundation, primer, anti-aging product, and moisturizer. Already you’ve cut nearly 5 products out of your beauty purchases.Similarly, buy lip glosses which can double up as cheek coloring and a lip product, or eye pens which have an eye liner at one end and a shadow attached at the other.

4) Don’t be picky with your brands. Most drugstore brands have at least a handful of brands that can easily compete against high end products, and if you can, go drugstore. Generally there is always some discount or coupons available for at least 1 beauty brand at any given time, so scout them out and purchase from the one offering the best deal. Some drugstores also have rewards cards and programs to their customers, so rack up those points, and those savings!

5) Return products that failed to deliver. Instead of holding onto that bottle of foundation that makes your face look extra oily or doesn’t give you proper coverage, pack it back up and return it to the drugstore. Quite a few stores will take open beauty returns with no fuss, so long as you have a receipt and if the bar-code is still intact.

Tip: Never purchase items without reading the reviews!

6) Avoid clearance makeup products. Makeup products that have made their way to the clearance pile are either thanks to #5 (opened returns) or because they have been on the shelf for too long. Scenario 1 could lead to infections/breakouts (you don’t know how the previous owner treated the product) or scenario 2 could also lead to infections/breakouts, since the products are likely to be nearing their expiration date.

7) Do buy clearance beauty products such as makeup tools or hair products. Less chances of infections/breakouts, and more chances of a worthwhile product.

She loves to take advantage of the various makeup samples and freebies available and is always looking for new ways to save some extra cash.

As much as we love the pool, we hate skimpy bikinis that look like they belong in the bedroom. Sexy is good – sexy is really good, but skanky, darling? Don’t advertise the goods before he takes you out to dinner…at least twice. Switch out your itty bitty bikini for a sleek and sexy one-piece instead. Sometimes the subtle bits of skin are enough to get the mind reeling.

An all time classic, this long sleeve, black one-piece accentuates your curves, and highlights your collarbone, your arms, and your waist. With a thick white line of detail down the center, the piece balances out women who are a touch curvier and flatters their assets beautifully.

Long-Sleeve One-Piece Swimsuit by Cover

Neiman Marcus

For those with a boyish figure, embrace your body type. We love women who have an athletic side, and this swimming approved top is a must. It draws attention to your arms and settles wonderfully over the chest for a subtle appeal. Throw on a pair of swim shorts underneath and you’re reader to hit the water. We are all over this!

Long-Sleeve Swim Tee & Hipster Swim Bottom by Cover

Neiman Marcus

For swimmers who prefer something a little more safe, we highly recommend this suit. It’s still attractive with the pull down zipper in the front drawing emphasis to your chest, but keeps the girls from popping out while swimming laps. If you’re a swimming instructor or a lifeguard, again, we highly recommend give yourself a thorough once over before heading out the door – from the front to the back.

Chunky Spring Long Sleeve One Piece by Billabong

PacSun

If you practically live on the beach, you’ll appreciate swimwear that can double up for a day out in the ocean and lounging around the house. This colorful one-piece ensemble is a wardrobe god-sent, especially for women who like to keep it very modest – no bikini lines, no thigh cleavage, and no butt cheeks hanging out. We’re keeping it streamline and sophisticated.

Long Sleeve One Piece Surf Suit by Seea

This year, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala, debuted with a fierce invitation for guests to come in PUNK: Chaos to Couture. Celebrities hit the gala in edgy attire, all ready to punk the night. From lacey bits, to pointy shoes, to daring cutouts, Hollywood’s finest were creating a true bit of chaos in New York, NY on May 6, 2013. Though some, were causing a chaos that was too mesmerizing to ignore.

“Punk was everywhere when I was in my teens and it’s always been a source of inspiration for me. So when I was asked to style the Gala and create the headpieces for the exhibition, it was an era, and a style, that I already felt close to. ”

Guido, Redken (Creative Consultant)

Kristin Stewart

Wearing: Stella McCartney

Stewart made quite a statement at the Gala, not only arriving sans Patterson, but decked out in a red pantsuit with lace highlighting her contours.

Kate Bosworth

Wearing: Balmain

Bosworth definitely stood out from the crowd in her heavily beaded, pink number. To add some punk to her couture, she tied it together with a thickly, studded belt.

Emma Watson

Wearing: Prabal Gurung

Watson arrives in her usual elegant fashion, having donned a high slit dress with plenty slits. Who knew punk could be classy?

Nina Dobrev

Wearing: Monique Lhuillier

Dobrev hit the Gala in style with a corset, lacey pantusit, a leather halter, and a tulle skirt.

Anne Hathaway

Wearing: Valentino

In a sheer and black, zebra print dress, Hathaway unleashes her inner blonde. Despite her racey dress, Hathaway embraces the theme and delivers.

Taylor Swift

Wearing: J Mendel

Swift graced the Gala in a black mesh dress, with panels and cutouts, along with a beaded, high collar. She looked beautifully regal with her hair pinned back to display the beading.

Who embraced their inner punk best?

Be generous! If you’re going to put on sunscreen, slather on enough to cover your whole face. Give it at least 30 minutes to set into your skin before heading out the door.

Gray skies are no excuse! Whether you can see the sun or not, your skin is still being exposed to the same amount of UVA rays as on a cloudy day. In fact, skincare consultants from organizations such as the American Laser Skincare recommend wearing sunscreen inside and outside of the house.

Reapply ladies! A higher SPF does not guarantee longer coverage. Sunblock should be reapplied every two hours in generous amounts.

Pick a sun protectant that protects from both UVA and UVB! Suncare formulas should include mexoryl, helioplex, or zinc oxide for effective results.

Your hair needs just as much sun protection as your skin. Mist your favorite thermal protectant over your hair or accessorize with a large floppy hat to cover up and protect your strands. Don’t forget to cover up your ears and neck!

Pick a sunscreen with at least SPF 30.

SPF in makeup is not enough! You must invest in a separate sunblock to protect your skin from the sun. While having SPF in your makeup is a nice gesture, it’s effectiveness pales in comparison to a bottle of sunblock.

Your lips need love too. Either pick a lipgloss with an SPF of 20, or substitute with a lip balm with an SPF of 50.

When layering on facial products, always make sure your sunscreen sits on top. It should be the last product in your skincare routine – closest to the sun.

It hurts seeing people around you all getting engaged or making plans to get hitched. It hurts to see that so many pretty girls have snatched up the good guys and thinking that none of the remaining ones would be into you.

It hurts, not having a ring on it.

When it comes down to it, marriage is perhaps the largest chapter in any woman’s life, because it is when she finds her prince charming and with him, her happy ending.

Myself included.

I’ve spent years preparing myself for marriage and thinking of what my married life would be like – would he be sweet to me? Is he the type to call me while I’m at work just to see if I’ve eaten lunch? Would he cook dinner for me on nights I’m too tired to move after work? What about the children?

More importantly, what about us? Would he love me?

It’s easy to fall into this rabbit hole, and maybe men do have it right, maybe we are too quick to get tied down. Instead of setting ourselves up to be simple housewives or a homemaker, we can make the best of our single lives.

Take reign of your education. When you’re married, he’s going to want and have all of your attention on him. Marriage has a tendency to fine tune both of your emotions so that you’re sensitive to each others feelings. Meaning, if he’s in a bad mood, chances are you are too. All you’ll be able to focus on is him – not your degree.

Become strong. Woman are emotionally more sensitive than men. We hurt more, and we feel more. It’s important to become emotionally stable before pursuing a relationship, especially if you’re hoping for one that is steady and honest. No man is going to stick around long if you’re yelling at him one moment and crying the next. Think about your prospective children as well. How can you be there for them, if you can’t be there for yourself?

Learn to be a house wife. Odd task, I know, but hear me out! Your husband will love nothing more than to come home to a beautiful wife, a clean house, and a delicious platter of home cooked food. Take some time off to learn to cook and master cleaning techniques that will leave your house spotless. There’s nothing wrong with being a housewife for a few hours of the day. Remember, a relationship is give and take.

Be a child – even just for a little bit. Or a sibling. Enjoy your time with your parents and your siblings. They’re your best friends, and before you know it you’ll find yourself unable to make time for them. Create those memories that you always wanted with them. Isn’t that what you would want as a parent?

Have fun with your girlfriends. Women have a tendency to put all of their attention on their man when they’re in a relationship, and marriage only deepens that magnitude of attention. So have fun with your girls, before you’re unable to pull yourself away for a girl’s night out. Years down the road you will be craving for a chance to hit the town in your sexiest heels, your ladies, and a wild night in mind. These are memories.

Marriage isn’t just about you and him. It’s about you and him, his parents, his siblings, your parents, your siblings, your prospective children, your friends, his friends – goodness even his boss! And the worst thing of all, marriage can break or intensify any of these relationships, which is a terrifying thought. While it is a beautiful notion, marriage is not as magical as we envisioned. It’s important to see the whole picture before jumping in too soon, and ruining its beauty.

There’s nothing wrong with waiting to put a ring on it.

When it comes to dinner parties, your last impression on your guests ends up being desert – which is why a beautifully executed cake can set or break the mood of your party. If you’re planning on serving cake for desert, contemplate coordinating your cake with the theme of the party, or making it the main focus. Cakes are a great way to add a majestic touch to an event, since it adds architectural and visual interest.

Here are some tips to consider when designing or picking your cake!

Before you even begin pondering the design, determine the taste and flavors. Pick a ingredient palette that is light and fresh! Your guests will definitely appreciate something out of the norm and not having their taste-buds bogged down with the typical, heavy butter cream cake. Cheesecake, vanilla, chocolate, etc. are simple flavors that are perfect for guests with a sweet tooth. Remember, if it comes down to butter-cream or whipped cream frosting, go for the whipped cream!!!

Consider the “architecture” of the cake. How many tiers were you considering? How tall will the cake be? Will there be columns to hold each layer? Or will the cake be molded into a particular shape or figure? Round layers or rectangular boxes instead?

Add color. For something unique and versatile, set the base of your cake as a white or soft cream, and decorate with a few colorful elements. Consider flowers or textural elements to bring life to your cake! For something subtle consider a monochromatic or single color, color scheme. Color gradients or “ombre” are another popular choice as of late. Check out Design Seed for further color inspiration!

Give it texture. Texture adds a hint of life and makes your cake move! It tells a story and that impact will last the entire night and then some! This season, we’re seeing lots of ruffles, rock candy or hard sugar forms, swirls, and embossing – definitely something for the advanced baker. If you’re unable to get a baker and are still learning to master the art of baking, you can always find decorative and edible cake decorations such as sprinkles, syrup, hard sugar forms, and candy from your local grocery store.

Present it. Just as you would present a speech, present your cake. Think about setting your cake on top of a doily or scrapbooking paper for an extra touch. Pick a cake stand to give the cake height and make it the true spotlight of your menu. You want it to stand out. Remember, focal point!

Don’t overdo it! Keep it simple! Too many colors or decorative elements can overwhelm your cake and your guests.

Your skin’s worst enemy is ready to tango.

Swap out your heavy duty foundations for a lighter skin base instead. Summer is around the corner and instead of focusing on your coverage, focus on finding a product that covers and protects. Opt for products that have a high SPF, a light coverage, and that will provide you sufficient moisturizer to keep you looking like a bombshell all summer long.

Tinted Moisturizers

Tinted Moisturizers are designed as a blend between a moisturizer and a foundation – enough moisture to keep you hydrated throughout the day and enough coverage to even out your skin while keeping things light. They’re a brilliant pick for the summer heat to keep you looking natural and your pores clear. If you’re struggling to find an appropriate shade, hit the department store beauty counters for a greater selection.

We suggest: Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer (SPF 20) – $43.00 (Oil Free)

BB Cream

Beauty Balm

Heavier than a tinted moisturizer, a BB Cream performs the same functions as a tinted moisturizer with better coverage and added skincare beneifts – or so it is proposed. Unfortunately, the US version of these extraordinary Asian products is no where close to the real deal. The Asian BB cream is the only thing you need to create a flawless canvas – no sunscreen, primer, concealer, or highlighter needed. The difference between the Tinted Moisturizer and the BB Cream is simply unmatchable. Sadly, the biggest con is there are a limited number of shades available.

We suggest: Holika Holika Aqua Petite Jelly BB Cream (SPF 20) – $19.90

CC Cream

Color Corrector or Coverage Control

Different than it’s BB counterpart, the CC cream is designed to correct your skin color. It cancels out redness and sallowness from the face, to give a streamline appearance. While the intentions were promising, the actual product is no different than the BB cream. The two products are easily comparable, even those from Asia.

We suggest: Complete Correction CC Cream (SPF 30) – $80.00

DD Cream

Daily Defense Cream

A new beauty product is scheduled to hit the market this summer, courtesy of Julep. They claim the DD cream will be a mix of the BB and CC Creams, but will be geared towards the body for reducing the appearance of stretch marks, moisturizing, and softening the skin. The coverage is said to be buildable and comes in a high SPF.

We suggest: Julep DD Creme – $36.00

By Margina Dennis

As an editorial makeup artist, I always check out the latest trends so I can incorporate them into looks I create and help make them wearable for the everyday woman. These four trends caught my eye at the New York Fashion Week Fall 2013 shows:

RED LIPS

This look stole the show on multiple runways including Vera Wang, Alice & Olivia and Marc by Marc Jacobs. The predominant trend was red matte. There truly is a perfect red for everyone — but if you don’t know which shade looks best on you, a neutral red (neither orange or blue) always works. Bite Beauty Matte Creme Lipstick in Pastille Rosebud, Red Sinner by Lipstick Queen, and Besame Red are great choices. Tip: make sure your lips are exfoliated to avoid flakiness. I also like to fill in the lips with a matching lip liner first to make the color last longer, and apply the lipstick with a lip brush for better control.

MATTE SKIN

The matte look made an appearance in shows such as The Row, J. Crew and Rodarte. The key to achieving this look is to first make sure your skin is in tip-top shape. Keeping your skin exfoliated and hydrated will keep the makeup from looking cakey and dry. After moisturizing, I like to apply a hydrating primer, such as LORAC I’m So Sensitive Soothing Face Primer because it works with all skin types. There are also many foundation choices available to achieve a matte look. If you prefer using liquid, Clinique Stay Matte Oil-Free Makeup is a great choice. It’s oil-free, comes in 20 shades and works for most skin types (but extremely dry types should pass on this one). Julie Hewett Crème to Powder Matte Foundation is paraben free, contains healing geranium, and a good choice for dry to combination skin. For those who prefer powder, try Make Up For Ever Duo Mat Powder Foundation. It’s has build-able coverage, is mattifying, and great for normal to combination skin.

BOLD BROWS

Designers Naeem Kham, Douglas Hannant and Threeasfour featured models with bold, well-defined brows. This is a must-try trend because after all, a great brow really brings a look together and makes you look polished! The best news? You don’t have to be born with perfect brows to get this look. Beauty brands Christi Harris, Anastasia, and Senna have solutions for any brow needs. Senna was one of the first brands to come out with brow powder and stencils; Christi Harris has a great brow shaping system called brow planning; Anastasia is a celebrity brow artist who has great products for home use. Whether it’s powder, pencil, tinted brow gel, or brow shaping, you won’t need to look further than these fabulous three!

NATURAL LOOK

Narcisco Rodriguez, Herve Leger and Ralph Lauren all had fresh natural faces accompanying their designs down the runway. Here’s how to achieve this look at home: On well-moisturized skin, apply a tinted moisturizer, like Pur Minerals 4 in 1 Tinted Moisturizer. It has a built-in primer, is highly moisturizing and has SPF 20. Use Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Concealer under the eyes, which has light reflectors and doesn’t crease. Follow with Paula Dorf Cheek Color Cream in Doll Face for a natural flush on the lips and cheeks. Finish the look with a black/brown mascara — and don’t forget to tame those brows!

What are your favorite trends from the runway this season? Let us know!

The months ahead may be dreary and gray, but that doesn’t mean your makeup should be! Liven up your winter look with these daring, bold colors.

EYES

Electrify your eyes with a deeply pigmented shadow (like L’Oreal HiP Bright Shadow Duo in Flamboyant) or a neon liner (like Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils). For an extra bold look, layer two different colors together — think emerald green eyeliner with deep purple shadow. Looking for a more subtle approach? Rim your eyes with a neutral black, gray or brown liner. Then, draw a single, bold colored line above your upper lash line for a perfect pop of color that’s not over-the-top.

HAIR

Ditch your golden highlights for a bold color statement. Using a hot pink, blue or purple spray-on color (like Rita Hazan Pop Color Temporary Color Spray), section off pieces of hair and highlight away! If you’re feeling extra daring, you could even apply the color all over (hey, it looks good on Katy Perry!). Another great way to try this look is to color one long section of hair (about 1/2 inch thick), and incorporate that section into a pretty side braid.

LIPS

Neutral lips? Eh. Bo-ring. Even classic red lips are drawing a yawn from me lately — which is why it’s time to upgrade to something a little more vibrant. A vivid fuchsia lipstick (like Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick in Pink Petal) will instantly brighten up your pout. Make the look everyday-wearable by keeping the rest of your makeup understated — think cat eyeliner or a subtle smoky eye.

CHEEKS

Pink, coral or tangerine? You don’t have to pick one when you can have all three. This winter, choose a multi-colored blush so you can brighten, highlight contour to your heart’s content — and change up your look every time. I love Benefit’s Fine One One multipurpose color stick, which includes a bold tangerine, a rosy coral and a sheer highlighting section.

What are your favorite ways to inject a little color into your look?

Happy 2013!

Now that the whirlwind of holiday festivities has officially passed, it’s time to ease back into the daily grind — and that includes getting your beauty routine back on track. If late nights, last-minute shopping and hectic schedules have forced you to forsake your beauty regimen, it’s time to give yourself a little extra TLC. Try these tips to get gorgeous again:

EAT, DRINK, SLEEP

Martinis and hors d’oeuvres are favorites among holiday partygoers, but they do not a healthy diet make. Since you are what you eat, get back on track by sticking to fresh produce, meats, whole grains — and lots of water. And now that your schedule has calmed down a bit, aim to get a full eight hours of sleep every night. After all, looking good on the outside depends on being healthy on the inside — and when your body is nourished, hydrated and rested, you’ll look and feel your best.

UPGRADE YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE

Even if your spirits are still aglow with holiday cheer, your complexion probably isn’t. Whether you’re experiencing stress-induced breakouts (or in my case, sleeping-in-my-makeup-induced breakouts), dryness or just general blah-ness, try to focus on your skin’s needs. To banish dullness, try a moisturizer with a brightening formula (like Bliss Triple Oxygen + C Energizing Cream, $54). Also, blast away breakouts by always remembering to wash — yes, even at night (try Simple Kind to Skin Cleansing Facial Wipes, $5.99. No need to rinse!) And last but not least, if you haven’t already swapped your warm-weather moisturizer for something more winter-friendly, be sure to pick one up that will fight dryness even in frigid temps.

GIVE YOUR NAILS A REST

Paint on, paint off — repeat, repeat, repeat. Changing the color of your mani may be great for your
look, but your nails and cuticles are probably doing less than stellar under all that lacquer. If peeling and chipping are plaguing your tips, pick up a cuticle cream (I love Burt’s Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream, $6.00) and massage into your nails and skin daily. Also consider going au naturale for a week or two — or, if you can’t bring yourself to go bare, choose a sheer or nude shade. When it starts to chip, it will hardly be noticeable — giving you more time before you need to take it all off with harsh, drying polish remover.

SHOW YOUR LOCKS SOME LOVE

If you OD’d on styling your strands this season, you’re probably suffering frayed, frizzy and lackluster hair. Treat your mane to a hot oil treatment (try Josie Maran Argan Oil Self-Heating Hair Treatment, $36) to restore maximum shine. Also, lay off the curling iron! It’s tempting to re-create the fabulous waves you rocked at your office party, but if you stick to low-heat blowouts for a couple of weeks, your hair will definitely thank you.

Feel free to share your own tips and tricks for healing post-holiday beauty woes!

With the festive season fast approaching, here’s 5 hot beauty tips for glamming up your party look this Christmas.

Red Lips

Red lips are hot at the moment and a favourite of celebs such as Rita Ora and Camilla Belle. Wearing red lipstick is an easy way to infuse a bit of red carpet glamour into your Christmas party look.

tip: When wearing red lipstick tone down the rest of your makeup. You don’t want to overdo it and this will help to accentuate your lips.

Hair Extensions

If you already have naturally long locks, lucky you! If not a set of clip in hair extensions is the perfect way to get the long flowing curls you’ll see on the catwalk.

Go for real hair extensions and you’ll be able to curl and style the hair just like you would with your natural hair. Loose, flowing curls always look great at a party or pin your extensions up for maximum red carpet glamour.

Nail Extensions

Vamp it up with a set of artificial nail extensions and for maximum impact match up the colour with your red lips! Acrylic extensions are always popular, but I’m a big fan of gel nails at the moment, which won’t chip and will last longer.

False Lashes

Eyes are the window to the soul, so frame them with a set of false lashes and no man will be able to resist!

tip: curl your own lashes and apply a little mascara prior to installing your false lashes. This will help them to blend with your own lashes and stay in place.

Plan your Hair Colour

If you have your hair coloured, make sure you book your appointment for just before your first party, so that your colour is looking deep and vibrant. It’s always a good idea to book your Christmas appointment well in advance as the festive period is a busy time for salons.

If you’re feeling bold why not go for a change of colour for the party season? Ever wondered how you would look as a redhead, well why not find out!

So, there’s my 5 tips for ensuring you are looking hot over the festive period. Do you have any other beauty tips for glamming up your Christmas party look? I’d love to hear them, so please leave a comment below!

If it’s true that the eyes are the window to the soul, then the eyebrows that are the tantalizing gates that frame them! A bit too dramatic? Perhaps, but if you don’t think eyebrows are important, think again.

It’s all very well to treat yourself to a good old threading or waxing session every now and again, but what about those times when you just can’t afford regular trips to the salon? Never fear, I’ve rustled up a few tips and tricks, so that you can achieve that perfectly arched brow. So finally, let us say farewell to those hungry-caterpillar-like brows forever! (Or at least till they grow back again)

The Tools

You’ll need bright light, some tweezers, grooming scissors, and fine brow brush (a soft toothbrush will do, just make sure you don’t need it anymore!)

Step One – The Importance of being Trimmed

In the past, I’ve been to salons to have my eyebrow shaped. This basically means, having my eyebrows trimmed.

Honestly, I had never realised quite how transforming a simple trim could be, until I tried it out myself. How so? Well for a start, tweezing long hair can lead to patches, so it’s safer (if you have a steady hand). Secondly, a trim can make heavy brows look lighter! And in turn, a basic trim will help create a clean brow line; as with shorter hair, it is able to lie flat on the surface.

So if you’re brave enough to try it yourself, here’s what you need to do.

First take the brow brush and sweep the hair upwards. If there are any hairs that show beyond the natural hair line, then carefully snip them.

Then brush the hairs again, but this time, brush it downwards. If you have any longer hairs that need to be trimmed again, do it now! Again, and I can not stress this enough, be very careful! Then brush your hairs back into place.

Step Two – What’s my perfect shape?

Before you even think about picking up a pair of tweezers, it’s important to understand your perfect shape!

Well mono-brows are the first thing that needs to go. I’m not sure I know anyone who can pull that look it off (answers on a postcard if you do!)

So let’s work out where the beginning of our brows should begin.

A lot of sources state you should hold a pencil vertically to the side of your nose, where the pencil lands – this is where your brow should be. However, I’ve followed this rule before and this had, quite unfortunately, not worked for me. I think I spent about a month walking around with one eyebrow longer than the other.

Never again!

It’s a much safer option to mark the beginning of your brow, by aligning it with the centre of your nostril. Now your arch should fall about 2/3rds in from the tear duct, at the back third of your eye.
Finally, the tail end of your eyebrow should fall level with the beginning of your brow. If it’s not (or your tail end is shorter) you can always correct this with an eyebrow pencil, in order to extend the line.

Step Three – Go Pluck Yourself!

Now using those guidelines – mark out your shape with a brow pencil. Then tweeze any hairs that fall over the line, tweezing from underneath, working in one row, from the beginning of your brow to the end of it.

Et Voila! It’s as easy is that, and now you have beautiful brows you can boast about! Have you got any more tips you would like to share?

For the beauty savvy smartphone user, here are some apps available on the market from fashion and beauty to nails:

Lookbook:

One of my favorite style inspiration apps, Lookbook allows me to view fashion from all around the world. It’s amazing that there are 14 year old skyscraper-esque teens in more fashionable wear than me.

Teen Vogue Snapshot:

This app is basically a Lookbook for teens. Teen Vogue Snapshot is lets you look at other stylish girls of the day and even submit your own look to be considered.

Sephora to Go:

Sephora to Go is everything about Sephora that you know and love in a bite sized app. It lets you shop online, see what local Sephora stores have your products, watch how-to videos, read reviews, and discover new trends.

Beautylish:

A haven for the beauty fanatic, Beautylish features a catalogue of makeup look and hairstyles, video tutorials, and reviews and forums of beauty products.

OPI app:

This app was referred to me by a nail fanatic friend. It allows you to virtually try on the numerous colors in the OPI nail collections. The color of the hand and the length of the fingernails is modifiable so that it looks more like your physical hand! That makes it much easier to see what colors go best with your skin tone. From the celebrity collections to the polishes with eccentric names, this app has it all.

With fall trends a bliss, it’s easy to get lost in the craziness of new color schemes, new palette’s, new products, and of course, the ever changing moisturizing routine to accompany the weather change. If you’re like me, you take joy in the basics and prefer to keep things simple and classy while playing up your best facial features.

While some people favor their full lips, high cheek bones, or IPod white smiles, others of us tend to let our eyes do the talking. My eyes are my best feature so I love to play them up with a little glam though still keeping things more on the natural side. In order to achieve this beauty balance, I reach for none other than my LORAC – Color me Couture Eye Palette which provides me with all the necessary tools and jewels to get the job done.

This beautifully crafted palette box is covered with gold and black decorates, is sturdily crafted, and is clearly labeled with Lorac on the front so there’s no mistaking your good taste. On the inside of the top flap, there’s a mirror that runs almost the whole length of the box which allows for a great, easy access view when you’re either on the go or in a hurry.

The real gemstones however are of course the eye shadows themselves. The five deep, exquisite shades offered in this palette are as follows: Enlighten (shimmery pearl), Style (golden pearl), Luxe (bronze pearl), Jade (shimmery olive green w/golden pearl), and Designer (shimmery black w/golden pearl). Also included is a double sided application brush with amazingly soft bristles that provide marvelous coverage. All the colors go on like cream and blend together incredibly smoothly. The numerous color combinations make this slightly pricey palette worth every pretty penny, as you’ll have no trouble mixing up something for any outfit or occasion, be it a fancy dinner or just a day at the beach.

While readily available at almost any Sephora counter, if you’re looking for a good deal and aren’t in a rush to purchase it, this palate is available through Amazon for only about $30 and can ship in about 6-10 business days. This is without a doubt one of Lorac’s best products and is a definite must try! If you’re interested in a more visual and interactive review of the palette, be sure to check out this video to get a better look at it!

British luxury brand Cowshed have launched a new range of at-home spa products to help you detoxify, sculpt and firm wobbly bits without having to break a sweat.

The secret to the range, which has the tagline “Targeted Help for Dimply Things, Cellulite and Bingo Wings”, is a ‘unique cellulite busting formula’ of Dermochlorella (a fresh water algae that has been clinically proven to improve skin tone by up to 46% and reduce the appearance of stretch marks by up to 32% after twelve weeks’ continuous use), Norwegian Kelp to help with detoxification, Bladderwrack to help improve skin elasticity and Pearl Moss to rejuvenate tired skin.

The range follows a three-step process, similar to that in Cowshed spas across in London, Berlin, Miami Beach and New York:

Step 1: Detoxify with the Detoxifying Body Scrub in order to purify and refine skin and to remove toxins. With a luxurious blend of Himalayan pink salt and Dead Sea salt polish, the scrub is designed to whittle away old skin. It’s also infused with Mango Butter and Sweet Almond oil to protect and nourish new skin, as well as rejuivinating essential oils of Grapefruit, Ylang-ylang and Sweet Orange and Mandarin- all included to provide an invigorating treatment! (RRP £34)

Step 2: Break down pesky toxins and soothe the appearance of lumps and bumps with the Body Sculpting Serum. Uplifting essential oils of Sweet Orange and Petitgrain, Ylang-ylang and Carrot Seed oil are combined with Tamanu, Macadamia Nut and Borage seed oils to help strengthen skin and reduce the appearance of stretch marks and cellulite. (RRP £36)

Step 3: Finish your routine with Extra Firming Body Butter, a sumptuous way to firm and condition skin. Designed to firm, tone and awaken skin, the trio of oils- Coconut, Tamanu and Rosehip- also provide 24 hour moisturisation, as well as improving the skin’s overall appearance and tone. Cowshed have also included those invigorating oils- this time a gorgeous mixture of Grapefruit, Clary Sage, Sweet Orange and Mandarin and Ylang-ylang, ensuring that even the most sluggish of couch potatoes will feel revitalised! (RRP £28)

What’s brilliant about Cowshed is that they use plant-based materials and their products are free of nasties such as parabens, petrochemicals and artificial fragrances and colours. Best of all, the whole range is cruelty-free! What’s not to like?

Buy the entire range at: Cowshed (International shipping available)

How can you maintain healthy and naturally glowing skin?

Believe it or not, it’s really easy to keep your skin looking great. Plus, it doesn’t require expensive beauty treatments like age defying creams or pricey mineral sea salt scrubs. It simply takes a good skin care regime, plenty of water and a healthy diet.

If you are prone to blemishes you’ll know how frustrating it can be, especially if you have an important event or party coming up and you want to look your best. Even if you have bought a new dress, you’ve had a manicure or you’ve visited your local Toni and Guy or Rush Hair, whether that is in New York or it’s the RushHair London branch, having bad skin makes you feel self conscious. This is why we have put together a few skin care tips for you to read.

Exfoliate

Use a blackhead wash each morning and night to ensure those pesky blackheads stay away. After you’ve scrubbed, soothe your skin using a deep cleansing pad which will wipe away any loose dirt as well as hydrating your skin.

Use cold water

It might not feel great, but did you know that using cold water on your face helps your pores to open up? This is an excellent way of ridding your skin of dirt.

Day and night cream

Get yourself a light day cream and a thick vitamin enriched night cream. They will both keep your skin feeling soft and hydrated all day. You could even mix a little moisturiser with your daily foundation; alternatively buy a tinted moisturiser which will not only give you even coverage but it will moisten your skin too.

Drink plenty of water

The more water you drink, the clearer and softer it will make your skin. Drinking 2 litres of water a day helps to rid your skin of toxins and oil.Plus it hydrates your skin, giving it natural elasticity. Avoid eating junk food because this may result in your skin becoming greasy and oily too. Instead, eat plenty of fruit and vegetables.

The British are pretty good at a lot of things; the Olympics for one (which quite a lot of us are surprised about, really…) But in the last couple of years, we’ve also been upping our game in the budget beauty industry. A new range of products is coming through and, whereas before I wouldn’t have really been interested, a change in circumstances has meant my champagne tastes have rapidly been replaced by a lemonade budget. I’ve decided to share some of my favourites with you. So sit back, relax and prepare to be (possibly) surprised at how much bang you could get for your buck!

MUA

This brand has been receiving rave reviews across the blogosphere, particularly for their ‘Undressed’ eyeshadow palette (shown above- £4/around $6)- a convincing dupe for the much lauded Urban Decay ‘Naked’ palette. At £32 cheaper than the original, it’s an absolute steal- the shadows are rich, long-lasting and excellent value for money. I may or may not have been stocking up on these…

The great thing about MUA is that, although cheap, they provide excellent quality. My other favourites from this range are the eye primer (£2.50/$3.90), pressed powder (£1/$1.56) and the lipstick in Shade 1- an almost perfect copycat for Anne Hathaway’s much lauded lippy in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, with a really nice texture and it lasts a good couple of hours. I’ve also heard really good things about their mascaras, so it seems that they’re a really good all-rounder- important, I think, if you’re taking the trouble to make an international order.

Sleek Makeup

Sleek is slightly pricier than MUA, but provides a similar range of products. Where they shine, however, is their colour range for foundations and concealers. They boast a colour range of seventeen shades and claim that 97% of women from all ethnicities can find a colour match within their range. As a devotee of MAC’s Studio Fix with Powder (£21 in the UK), I was intrigued to try their Crème to Powder foundation (£7.99/$12.46). The great thing is, you can order a testing kit, so avoiding costly mistakes! Although you’d have to wrench my MAC foundation from my cold, dead hands, the Sleek does come a close second.

My favourite product from Sleek though is their eyebrow kit (£7.99/$12.63). I’d been a devotee of Benefit’s Brow Zings for a few years, before Kate Middleton made eyebrows fashionable. The Benefit kit costs £22.50 and, to be honest, there’s not a lot to separate the two kits at all. Apart from about fifteen quid.

Boots 17 AND MeMeMe Cosmetics

I’ve grouped these two together as I’m not sure how easily available they are to US readers. However, they are both on my budget staples list! From 17, I religiously use the Hide & Chic undereye concealer (£4.99/$7.88), which is brilliant for me as my job means I have to get up at 6 a.m. There are a lot of Touche Eclait dupes, so even if you can’t find 17 near you, I urge you to try one of the cheaper alternatives! I also really like their primer, Photo Flawless (£4.99/$7.88). It feels exactly like Benefit’s The Porefessional on the skin and is just as good, in my opinion.

Speaking of Benefit, MeMeMe have been coming up with some excellent dupes of Moon Beam, High Beam and Benetint. There have been a rash of these on the market, but these are by far the best and most authentic feeling. All three products- Beat The Blues Moon Beam, Beat The Blues Sun Beam and Pussy Cat Cheek and Lip Tint come in at a reasonable £5.25 ($8.20)- about £13 cheaper than the original products.

So, tell me- what are your favourite budget brands? Are you convinced that you get what you pay for or could you be persuaded to try any of these products?

Now that summer is coming to a close and your skin is starting to shed that summer tan, you may glance in the mirror in horror as you notice tiny little brown spots that aren’t quite fading with the tan. To top it off your skin has a ruddy, dull look to it. The good news is: Congrats! You probably really enjoyed your summer! The bad news is, your skin took a hit from those beach/lake/hiking trips, and you now have not so cute little brown spots to prove it

So what to do?!

There are many different creams, treatments and potions that help lighten dark spots (hyperpigmentation) I’ll outline some of the most popular and effective products/treatments I have seen work with my clients.

      Fotofacial or IPL

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. It delivers a bright blast of light at different energy levels, targeting pigment and evening out skin tone. This procedure is great for getting rid of dark spots, broken capillaries, small spider veins and facial redness. This is an amazing treatment, and most people not only see improvement in evening out skin color, but also a slight plumping of the skin and can even help keep breakouts under control. Usually 5-7 treatments are needed for optimal results, although most people see results with the very first treatment.

Chemical Peels

There are many different chemicals that can be used to treat your skin, and that can all be determined by your skin care consultant. Chemicals are used to remove the outer layers of your skin, resulting in smoother skin, and after a series, lighter pigmentation.

Obagi Clear

This product uses 4% hydroquinone to lighten dark spots. It works by suppressing the melanin (color) in the skin, fading dark spots and preventing any more from coming to the surface. It is a prescription product, and should only be used as directed by your doctor/skin care specialist.

SkinCeuticals Pigment Regulator

If you would like to stay away from hydroquinone, there is another option. Pigment Regulator takes a little longer to see results, but in a few months you will start to notice spots lightening and and your overall skin looking brighter. It uses Kojic Acid and Emblica to lighten pigmentation. This is a product you can use long term without any of the same risks of hydroquinone. It goes on very light and is very unlikely to cause negative skin reactions.

Last but not least, make sure you are using sunscreen. When any of these treatments are preformed, your skin is more sensitive and likely to cause even more damage if exposed to the sun without SPF. Make sure to go out and get a sunscreen that is 35+ and has the broad spectrum label on it.

Also when you go into an office to have a treatment done keep in mind they may suggest different things depending on your skin type, so have an open mind. With a little hard work, your smooth flawless skin will be back in no time!

For fashion blogger Jennifer of Art in Our Blood, it’s never too early to start hitting up the streets and rocking your favorite fashion trend. She has be running her blog since at the mere age of 15 for nearly two years. She’s also one of the finest Sherlock Holmes addicts I have had the honor of coming across in the blogosphere, for her blog’s name was inspired by this very series! This girl definitely has fab taste!

“Art in the blood is liable to take the strangest of forms.” – Sherlock Holmes

Known for her gypsy-like and bohemian taste, lately Jennifer has been venturing out and taking the fashion scene by the horns with her bold and daring pieces.

We’re loving the juxtaposition with the billowy chiffon blouse and the structure leather leggings. The cat-eye sunglasses complete the look to give it an oldie but still a goodie vibe. Again down below Jennifer pairs up an edgy pair of cut out leather leggings, and finishes off the look with a fluffy, bouncy scarf to soften the look. We’re loving the all black attire. Very slimming and chic!

Here we see Jennifer heading in a completely differnt with soft flowy and lacey fabrics. Lightweight and romantic – ideal for summer afternoons. To bring together the look she paired her favorite gold toned accesorries with her darling dresses, and let her hair hang over her face like a curtain.

Our favorite beauty trend of all times is the classic shade of red, bold lips. Get ready to make a statement with our best red lipstick picks!

Lancome Rouge in Love: 170 – At the top of our list, #170 has is a bright, fire-engine red with a creamy blue base. The formula is creamy and glides on like a dream.

Chanel: Dragon – A deep limited edition red that is a timeless classic and has us screaming S.O.S. This beauty is hot! This particular shade of red looks great on everyone.
MAC Prolong Wear: Prolong – Mac has brought some serious game with this intensely pigmented brick red lipstick. The color is amplified and the formula itself is long wearing.

MAC: Russian Red – If Chanel Dragon doesn’t cut it, Russian Red is another great classic red that looks flattering on everyone.

Revlon Lip-Butter: Candy Apple – If you’re scared to take your first step into the world of reds, this sheer lipbutter is a great user friendly tomato-red for beginners. More like a balm rather than a lipstick, Candy Apply gives its wearer the control to build up the color intensity of the pigment.

Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain: Crimson – Another brick red pigment that is not too bright and perfect for a natural red lip. The color is sheer, but gives your lips a stunning finish.

Mary Kay: Crimson Glow – Ladies with darker skin should go for reds with purple undertones to compliment their skin color. Crimson Glow in particular wears spectacularly well and is long lasting.

Makeup brushes are an expensive investment, with most brush sets ranging from $50.00 to over $100.00! Getting a new brush set every year is simply not an option, nor is it necessary. With proper love and care, a good brush set can easily last you between 5 – 20+ years! The key is deep cleaning your brushes once a week to renew them to their original state.

Why

After a long week’s worth of use, you’ll start to notice that your makeup brushes are not applying your makeup at their regular standard. You’ll notice streaking, discoloration in your pigments, and harsher application. Even after spot cleaning your brushes these problems still persist. Why?

By not deep cleaning your makeup brushes, you are allowing for products to buildup inside your brushes. As the buildup continues to increases, your brushes will get harder and the strands will begin to clump. This is particularly common in foundation brushes.

In some cases, your skin might be victim to an unexpected break out. Bacteria, germs, and dust love makeup brushes! Especially if you leave them out in the open or on your bathroom counter.

Cleaning

Pick a brush cleanser! The best brush cleanser for your makeup brushes is baby shampoo. Baby shampoo has fewer chemicals than your usual brush cleanser, is gentle on the bristles of your brushes, and is inexpensive. If you’re not comfortable using baby shampoo, you can always find great high-end brush cleansers at Sephora or MAC.

Take a paper towel and set it down on a flat surface. Pick a location where your brushes will stay safe and can dry quickly. Roll up a thick towel and place it at the top of your paper towel.

Start by cleaning one brush at a time, running the bristles of the brush under warm water. The important part of maintaining your makeup brushes, is not to allow the water to come in contact with the glue in the ferrel of your makeup brush. Otherwise the glue will loosen and the brush will separate. Hold your brush at an angle when cleaning to make sure the water runs down the brush instead.

Squirt a dime size amount of baby shampoo into a dish and add a handful of water. Swirl your brush in the cleanser. You can also drizzle the baby shampoo onto your brush and then swirl it in the palm of your hand. This will give you more control over your brush and a deeper clean.

Don’t be afraid to get a little rough with your brushes! You want to make sure the cleanser is reaching into the densest part of the brush hairs.

As the water becomes discolored, discard the old and refill your dish with the same formulation once again. Repeat the same steps until your brushes are spotless. You can test your brushes on a piece of toilet paper to check it they are completely clean.

As each brush is cleaned, squeeze out the excess water and lay them out on the paper towel. Angle them handle up, using the rolled towel as leverage.

Once you have finished washing all of your brushes, while they are still damp, go back and shape each of the brush heads. Each makeup brush is specially designed for a specific function. (Fluff up your powder brushes, create a strong tip on your angled eye brush, and smooth down the wild hairs in your foundation brush.)

This step is optional, but if you are concerned about your brushes losing their shape, invest in brush guards. Brush guards are designed to help your brushes dry faster and maintain their shape.

Allow 1-2 full days for your brushes to completely dry before pulling them out for another week’s worth of hard work and fun.

Thermal Round Brush

If you’re big on volume and stunning blow outs, a round brush is a must. It’s perfect for giving your hair movement and a soft inner curl. If you’re in the market for a round brush intended for blow out use, always go for the thermal brushes. Thermal brushes lock in heat, give you bounce and volume, and help create that chic hairstyle.

Boar Bristle Palm Brush

A palm brush is another great hair brush to add to your brush collection. You can use it to lightly brush out your curls to give them a soft look, to tame your flyaways, or to give your hair a quick brush through. Go for boar bristle brushes to add some shine to your hair – you won’t regret it.

Wide Tooth Comb

Wide tooth combs have bristles that are parted wider and are thicker. They do not pull or tug on the hair. They are beautiful for spreading out your hair extras such as serums, hair spray, conditioner, etc. and can be used both in the shower and out. Personally I prefer the wide tooth comb over the paddle brush as well to de-tangle vicious knots and for everyday use. A must have for sure!

Rat Tail Comb

Rat tail combs are as versatile as it gets. Check out the usages for your rat tail comb below:

Great for defining or creating a streamline part.

An excellent alternative to the teasing comb. Give that hair some “oomph!”

The perfect aid for sectioning your hair.

Serves a a fine tooth brush, which can create sculpted and clean looks.

Choose a comb with a thin and strong handle. A highlighting comb is a fantastic option.

Mascara Wand

Laugh all you want, but a clean mascara brush is a life safer! Spritz a bit of hairspray or slather a tiny bit of gel over the spooly and brush down those stubborn baby hairs. Flyaways beware!

BB creams (also know as Blemish Balm Cream ) were brought to the beauty scene in the 1980s by Korean actresses and singers. From women to men, groups such as 2NE1, Big Bang, and SNSD have confessed the secret of their porcelain skin to be the infamous BB cream. Designed to act like a foundation, the BB cream not only offers coverage but skin benefits as well. Significant skin benefits, and a common question about what bb cream is the best for acne prone skin. We’re looking at not only a better alternative to foundation, but a lighter and more natural alternative to the tinted moisturizer.

Tinted Moisturizer

Created to serve as a pigmented moisturizer. It doubles as a hydrator for your skin, and a toner for your skin (evens out your complexion beautiful!).

Light SPFs (15-30) are included in each moisturizer, making it ideal for wearing o ut in the sun.

The coverage is sheer – no hiding those scar marks or pimples.

Due to its formulation, tinted moisturizer are not ideal for long-term wear. The ideal time frame of a tinted moisturizer is between 4-5 hours. In some cases they have proven to last for a mere 3 hours depending your climate.

No extra benefits included such as anti-aging or anti-wrinkle.

BB Cream

Contains various health and skin benefits from anti-wrinkle, firming, hydrating, whitening, healing, and much, much more!

SPF in BB creams is generally stronger at 35+.

The coverage is heavier than a tinted moisturizer, however it is not the same as a foundation. This is ideal for covering up receding or fading marks. (Beware! American BB Creams have proven to be more sheer than comm on Asian BB Creams!)

The formula is lighter than a BB cream, but thicker than the average tinted moisturizer.

Limited selection of shades. We’re looking at 1-2 shades at most. In very rare cases you might get 4.

Can be used on its own. It works as an excellent foundation and concealer mix. (If you need to pile on extra products on top of your BB Cream, it’s not working! BB creams are deigned to be alternatives to foundation!)

A good BB cream will not oxidize, and thus can be used for almost up to 12 hours!

If you’re in the market for a good BB Cream, stick to well known Asian brands for best results: Missha, The Face Shop, Etude House, Skin Food, and Skin79. The American BB Cream is vastly different than the one used in Asian countries. They are no way up to par! Stay tuned for further details on some of the latest American BB Creams!

If you’re having trouble purchasing a BB Cream, have no fear! You can make your own using products you already own! Check out this video by elisasung at 0:34. Elisa uses her favorite face products such as her sunscreen, foundation, concealer, primer, strobe cream, and other face basics to create a BB Cream ideal for her!

Inspired by The World Needs More Love Letters

Our lives have always been pre-sequenced: born once, live once, and die only once. We get one chance to make it right, and one chance to live right.

But we also get one chance to be loved, and to love.

And we will always be given that chance.

You may not realize it, but even at this very moment someone’s life is being changed. Someone you have personally touched with your kindness, your actions, your thoughts, and your life. You’ve brought bliss to them, and in return, they have given you a moment’s worth of love.

You are loved just for being you – for being born. You’re a representation of what mankind has striven to accomplish to generations. You are human, and no one can fault you for that.

There will be days when the tears don’t stop and the gloom casts dark shadows on your mind’s wall, but there will also be days when the sun refuses to fade and smiles bloom.

“Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.” – Buddha

There will be these days.

You just have to give them a chance to come, and you have to give them a chance to pass.

Wherever you are and whomever you may be, the clouds will always hang low and the sun will always shine through. But those moments are nothing compared to the love you are given and the love you are giving.

There are more than 7 billion people in the world. 7 billion people who are all loved for just being alive. You are part of that 7 billion. You are loved by all these people, and that is reason enough to be blissful.

Love,

This year we are seeing a retro-revival in some of the hottest hair trends spotted on the runway, red carpet, and street. Check out these five vintage-inspired hairstyles and how to pull them off this fall (or why wait? Try them now!).

Barrel Curls

Large barrel curls instantly remind us of classic screen beauties such as Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, and Jean Harlow. Old Hollywood glamour is constantly looked to for inspiration, and it seems today’s starlets are channeling their old Hollywood sex appeal. Celebs including Emma Stone, Megan Fox, and Eva Longoria have been seen recently walking the red carpet donning big, beautiful barrel curls. Note: to get the curls you will need large heated rollers and a generous amount of stronghold hairspray (try Pravana Finish Rock Hard Mist for long lasting hold minus the stiffness). Slick your hair back and pull curls to the side for the ultimate vintage-glam effect.

The Bouffant

Dig out your teasing comb and stock up on hairspray. 1960’s inspired volume is big news this season. Leggy models walked the fall 2012 runways of Carolina Herrera, Peter Som, D2 Squared, and Moschino rocking the classic bouffant style. To get the look, start by running a dime-sized dollop of volumizing mouse (try Redken Guts 10 Volume Spray Foam) through damp, clean hair then blow dry for volume. Section your hair from front to back, teasing only the sections at the crown of your head to avoid the “Snooki Pouf”.

The 1960’s Ponytail

Hair trends continue to echo the sixties this season, and this time it’s a much more relaxed look the decade is serving up. The 1960’s ponytail is a timeless style, and hairstylist Garren gave Anna Sui models a modernized version with a brushed-back “kitten bump” (i.e. mini bouffant) before pinning hair back at the nape of the neck. Easy to master, this is a sophisticated and fierce look both for day and night. Once styled, top it off with a stronghold hairspray. Slip into something swanky and channel your inner Bridget Bardot!

Blunt Bangs

While bangs have been around for seasons now, it’s the blunt bang that’s making its comeback this fall. As seen on the runways of Versace, Marni, and Elie Saab, this structured style seems to take inspiration from the likes of 1970’s rock goddesses Jane Birkin and Francois Hardy. The retro-chic look is guaranteed to spice up any haircut from a cropped bob to long, tresseled locks. The key to pulling it off: find a length and thickness that will highlight the shape of your face. Look to celebs such as Taylor Swift, Jessica Biel, and Erin O’Conner for modern inspiration.

The Pixie Cut

First made famous by supermodel Twiggy in the 1960’s, the boy-inspired pixie cut seems to be taking a turn toward mainstream. Recently celebrities such as Anne Hathaway, Michelle Williams, Carey Mulligan, and Emma Watson have brought the iconic cut back into the limelight. The androgynous look isn’t for everyone however, so before you make the cut talk to your go-to hair guru to find out if the hairstyle will work with your features!
